Fun facts about me
Playing the Ottavino
Baroque music draws me in, full of lush compositions and expressive players. The keyboard responds with tiny pluckers that bring the strings to life. The music invites movement, joy, and dance.
Writing
Blog topics tend to find me. I enjoy exploring everyday moments and finding deeper meaning. In Read, Reflect, Respond…, the blog becomes a tool for adults to challenge themselves and grow. Drawing from my own experiences, I’ve long focused on encouraging change in how we raise boys. Writing remains one of the most powerful tools we have. When was the last time you wrote a real letter, pen to paper?
Watercolors
Watercolor painting requires thinking ahead and designing in reverse. You must imagine the finished image before your first brushstroke. Therapy is similar. I hold a vision of your potential while helping you explore your past to create something new in the present. Both art and therapy offer fresh perspectives that open space for growth and change.
I’m Dr. Gloria Vanderhorst, and I’ve spent more than 30 years helping individuals, couples, and families navigate the emotional challenges that come with being human. My work is grounded in clinical research and shaped by decades of listening closely to people’s stories, each one complex, unique, and deserving of care.
I became a psychologist not just out of professional interest, but because I’ve always been drawn to the emotional lives of people and how we carry the past into the present. I’ve worked in schools, hospitals, private practice, and now through secure virtual sessions across Maryland and DC. Wherever I meet someone, grieving, overwhelmed, stuck, or ready for change, I aim to create a space that feels steady, respectful, and focused on what matters most to them.
In addition to being a psychologist, I’m a mother and grandmother. These roles have shaped how I understand growth, conflict, connection, and resilience. I’m also an author and a longtime lover of music. Playing the harpsichord is one of the ways I stay grounded and connected to beauty, discipline, and joy.
I believe therapy is a place for honesty and hope. Whether you’re seeking clarity, support, or transformation, we’ll work together to uncover what’s getting in the way and what will help move you forward.

A good virtual therapist listens with intention, not just to your words but to the story behind them. She takes time to understand what motivates you, where you feel overwhelmed, and what kind of support you truly need.
A good therapist knows how to challenge you gently, helping you grow without pushing you past your capacity. She recognizes your strengths and helps you use them, while also giving you tools to navigate your struggles with more confidence and clarity.
When I work with clients, I witness something powerful. I see the private, often unspoken parts of people’s lives—the fears, the doubts, the patterns they are ready to change. It is a privilege to do this work. It is meaningful and human, and it never gets old.
I believe that all behavior makes sense in its context. That belief keeps me curious and open, not critical. I am not here to judge your choices, but to help you understand how you got here and what you want to do next. From that place of understanding, real change is possible.
Together, we will look honestly at the past, work through the present, and build a future that feels more aligned with who you are and what matters most to you.
Virtual therapy allows us to do this important work from wherever you are, with the same depth and connection as in-person care, and the flexibility that modern life often demands.
The therapy process is collaborative. Together, we’ll explore your goals, emotional patterns, and personal values. My role is to guide you with compassion and clinical insight, empowering you to develop tools for emotional clarity, improved relationships, and long-term resilience. As a Licensed Telehealth Psychologist in Maryland and DC, Dr. Vanderhorst offers flexible virtual therapy sessions from the comfort of your home.
